Petrified Wood is actually a fossil of a woody plant preserved by mineralization through time by chemical and physical processes. The original organic material is replaced, usually by some type of silica (which in turn becomes Agate, Jasper, Chert, or other forms of Quartz). However, because the preservation took place slowly over time, you can still clearly see the pattern of the original wood.
